Frequently Asked Questions

DOES SUGARING HURT?

Let’s not beat around the bush (hehe…). You’re having your hair ripped out from the root, so there’s going to be some pain. Each person has different pain tolerances, so if pain is your worry, try a numbing cream on the area before your apt. BUT, it’s way less painful than waxing, and much less discomfort after your service than with waxing or shaving. Less ingrown hairs and your skin is less disturbed!

HOW LONG DOES MY HAIR NEED TO BE TO GET SUGARED?

At least the length of a grain of rice. 10+ days since last shave or 2+ weeks since last sugaring/waxing/epilation

HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR SPACE SAFE AND SANITARY?

  1. Before each service the service table is sanitized and a new sheet is laid down for each client. All sheets and towels are washed after each client even if they are not used.

  2. After each appointment the table is again sanitized as well as surfaces, door knobs, and light switches, not only in the sugaring room but also along the path of travel from the entrance.

  3. I wear gloves during your service at all times and change as necessary. I NEVER double dip sugar (and neither should any other sugar tech!).

CAN I GET SUGARED WHILE PREGNANT?

100%. You can get sugared all the way up to and including your due date if you want to! Just be mindful that just like getting sugared on your period, you may be a bit more sensitive.

I’M A PLUS-SIZED PERSON, CAN I STILL GET SUGARED?

I wish I never got this question, because the answer is….. YES ABSOLUTELY OF COURSE. Sugaring is for every single body type. If you’ve had a sugar tech who has said otherwise or denied you service in the past, they should not be a sugar tech. Period. All bodies are welcome at Smooth.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR A LASH LIFT ‘N TINT?

Arrive to your apt with a clean face (no makeup on or around your eyes). If you wear contact lenses there is no reason to take them out; your lashes will be taped down and nothing will impact your lenses. After your lash lift and tint you won’t be able to get your lashes wet for 24 hours, so make sure you plan your showers accordingly :)

I JUST GOT HOME FROM SUGARING AND MY PARTNER WANTS TO GET IT ON… CAN I DO THAT?

Any sexual activity or contact with a partner in the areas you’ve had sugared is discouraged. Your pores are open and vulnerable to their surroundings for 24 hours after service and you want to keep the area as clean as possible which means far away from your partners bodily fluids, hair, or lotions/body oils.

I’M A NON-BINARY PERSON WITH MALE ANATOMY…WHAT CAN I EXPECT?

I’m so glad you’re here, I know the industry hasn’t always been the most welcoming space for you. You can expect the same treatment as any other client in my space, with respect for your pronouns, consent, and comfortability. When it comes to sugaring, I am trained in sugaring male anatomy and will help coach you through the positioning that will help you feel as comfortable as possible. I can also offer numbing cream if you are feeling a bit too much pain, and as always, you have the right to stop or pause a treatment whenever is needed! CAN I GET MY UPPER LIP SUGARED?

Yes! You can sugar your entire face including nostrils and eyebrows.

DO YOU ACCEPT E-TRANSFER?

Yes! I accept all types of payment including cash, e-transfer, credit card, debit card, and apple pay. I DO NOT accept cheques.

I HAVE AN INGROWN HAIR ON MY PUBIC AREA. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

It’s so tempting to pick, I know, but don’t! Your skin is a huge organ that is constantly shedding cells and pushing new ones forward. Through this process your skin will naturally push your ingrown to the surface. To aid in its relief you can exfoliate with a dry brush and use the SugarSMAC Ingrown Treatment for quicker healing.

CAN I GET SUGARED WITH GENITAL PIERCINGS?

Absolutely!

CAN I GET SUGARED WITH A GENITAL STI/STD?

Yes, you can. However, it is best to avoid sugaring if you are in the middle of an outbreak (HPV/warts) to avoid spread. If you have any specific concerns, feel free to contact me and we can discuss privately. Your safety, comfort, confidentiality, and satisfaction are my #1 priority!

WHEN SHOULD I AVOID GETTING SUGARED?

Avoid sugaring if you:

  • Are currently on Accutane. It can cause the skin to be thinner and more sensitive, resulting in bruising and skin lifting during the sugaring process.

  • Used Retinol in the last 2 weeks. Retinol can cause similar issues to Accutane, i.e. thinning/sensitive skin resulting in bruising and skin lifting.

  • Have a yeast infection, as sugaring can spread the infection to treated areas as the sugar moves around.

  • Have a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) as it can extend your healing process by potentially introducing more germs into your urethra. My advice is to wait until the infection has cleared.

  • Have injured/broken skin or a scar that is still healing, as the process of sugaring can cause further injury to the area. However, if you have for example an open cut or wound on your leg but would still like your legs sugared, I will avoid the area during service. In that case, I would recommend covering with a bandage before arriving to ensure the wound stays clean and unbothered.
